Design, construction and testing of scaled model of a large tidal power plant.
The proposed plant will be very different of the (arrays) of axial turbines which are typically used for tidal power plants. This novel design consists of one or more large aspect ratio "wing(s)" which are moving in an essentially vertical plane up and down. Thus, this design exploits the kinetic energy of the predominantly horizontal water flow generated by the tidal cycle near ocean coasts or estuaries. This design concept has considerably less negative impact on marine biology than the axial turbines which are typically used for conventional power plants. We envision that the efficiency of the proposed novel plants will be greatly increased by the implementing active flow control technology which we have been developing in our laboratory during the past several years.
The student team will explore several preliminary design concepts before deciding on a most promising version. Several small preliminary models will be constructed and tested in the water tunnels of the AME Hydrodynamics Laboratory. Based on these tests, a final larger model will be designed, built, and tested, first in the water tunnels and later in a real tide (probably San Diego). |
