SENIOR CAPSTONE PROJECT MATCHING
Select the initial course semester:
Solar/Battery Automotive Power Systems Monitoring
Title: Solar/Battery Automotive Power Systems Monitoring
Category: Student Club/Organization
Intellectual Property: The intellectual property will be placed in the public domain
Year: 2009
Semester: Fall
Sponsor Name: University of Arizona Solar Racing Club
Sponsoring advisors: Sean Martinez
Sponsor URL: http://www.solarcar.arizona.edu/
Sponsor Information: The Solar Racing Club is a student run club with the goal of researching the use of alternative energy sources to power a vehicle. The Club participates in a variety of design /build/compete events on the national level. Members of the Club design and build a new car every few years and incorporate the newest technology to achieve maximum efficiency of energy generation and storage.
ITAR Restriction: No
Scope of work: The Solar Racing Club has built a new vehicle for 2009-2010 and will be using the vehicle to evaluate the function of lithium ion batteries and the use of super capacitors as energy storage. In order to evaluate the new technologies the club needs a data acquisition system to monitor the vehicle power systems. The monitoring system will be able to show the power usage and generation of various configurations of the car’s overall energy systems as well as show where these differences are.
The primary goal of an Energy Systems Monitoring Device is to evaluate the gains in battery charge by integrating super capacitors as a regenerative braking device and as a high power acceleration booster. The design group will be responsible for providing a working system to the club including timelines, budget and documentation of work. The budget is not to exceed $2000 and will be provided by the club. Proper project management process are required as well as design reviews and design sign off by the club.
