Sponsor Information: UA Baja Racing is a team of undergraduate students who participate in the Baja SAE collegiate design series.  Baja SAE is an international competition in which students are tasked to design, build, market, and race a single-seat off-road vehicle.
ITAR Restriction: No
Scope of work: The Baja SAE design competition requires teams to use an unmodified Briggs & Stratton Model 20, 10 horsepower engine with a displacement of 305cc.  Teams are tasked to find the most appropriate way to transmit power and torque from the engine output to the vehicle wheels by way of original design, or through use of off-the-shelf components.  Competitive edge at competition originates at the teams ability to accelerate quickly while also being able to reach a fast top speed.  Vehicle drivetrain must be reliable and able to withstand the severe punishment of off-road terrain.  Several concepts have been explored in team history and have been, but are not limited to, CVT (continuously variable transmission) with a fixed gear reduction, CVT with a High/Low/Reverse gearbox, and five speed manual transmission.  The team tasked with designing, building, and thoroughly validating the 2010 UA Baja vehicle drivetrain will need to keep the following design characteristics in mind;

Vehicle engine limited to 10hp
Engine torque peaks at 14.5 ft-lb
Proper materials selection for power transmission
Balance between lightweight and durability
Appropriate tire selection

Design does not end when the product has been fabricated as any successful Baja team will put quality time into testing and tuning of the vehicle transmission to obtain proper dynamic characteristics, such as shifting, downshifting, proper cooling, and acceleration.
